Canada Rocc Part 2 – Buffing & 3D Printing

Buffing Canada Rocc started early this week. The paint had burned marks from the previous owner but over all the paint looks pretty amazing considering how it arrived at the shop. We used Meguiars Ultra Cut 105 compound, then buffed with Meguiars Mirror Glaze 205 compound. Additionally, we need to do a Meguiars Mirror Glaze 3 compound buff on it, but it’s off to a really good start.

We also needed to address some of the parts that are either missing, hard to find or no longer available. I started drawing the missing parts in Fusion 360 CAD. After that, I 3D printing parts on our Any Cubic Photon 3d resin printer. The, I printed some mirror adjusting knobs, badge retainer clips and some bumper trim tests. The bumper trim is no longer available and we are talking to a company to have them remanufactured in black and red.

Stay tuned for more updates on this project and products. Coming up in future posts: Upholstery repair, B Pillar prep & decal install, 2.25″ Techtonics Tuning exhaust and engine maintenance.

Canada Rocc Restoration Part 2: Reviving Paint and Printing Rare Parts

The restoration of the Canada Rocc continues with a major focus on exterior aesthetics and custom parts manufacturing. In the second phase of this build, we tackled two primary challenges: restoring the original paint and recreating obsolete components. At WestCoastRoccos, we combine traditional detailing techniques with modern 3D printing technology. Specifically, this blend of skills allows us to “make it right” even when the factory parts no longer exist.

Restoring Decades-Old Paint to a Mirror Shine

When the Canada Rocc arrived, the paint showed significant “burn marks” from a previous owner’s detailing attempt. However, the overall condition of the finish remained surprisingly good once we began our work. We started the process early in the week by removing the side body trim, the rear wing, and the glass to ensure a thorough buff.

We utilized a multi-stage compounding process to bring back the depth and clarity of the finish. First, we used Meguiars Ultra Cut 105 to level out the deeper imperfections. Then, we followed up with Meguiars Mirror Glaze 205 to refine the surface and remove any haze. We still plan to perform a final pass with Meguiars Mirror Glaze 3 to achieve a show-quality shine. As a result, the paint is already transforming into a deep, vibrant finish that belies the car’s age.

3D Printing Obsolete and Hard-to-Find Parts

One of the biggest hurdles in any Mk2 Scirocco restoration is finding missing trim and hardware. Specifically, many of these parts are now No Longer Available (NLA) from Volkswagen. To solve this, we used Fusion 360 CAD software to design exact replicas of the original components. We then utilized our Any Cubic Photon 3D resin printer to bring these digital files to life with incredible detail.

Our 3D printing efforts for the Canada Rocc included several vital items:

  • Mirror Adjusting Knobs: Restoring tactile control to the interior.

  • Badge Retainer Clips: Ensuring exterior emblems stay securely attached to the body.

  • Bumper Trim Test Samples: We successfully printed samples to test fitment for new bumper trim.

Furthermore, we are currently working with a manufacturing partner to mass-produce these bumper trims in both black and red. Thus, we are not just fixing one car; we are creating a supply of parts for the entire Scirocco community.

Preparing for the Next Stage of the Build

Cleaning the glass and removing the old trim has revealed a much cleaner silhouette for the Canada Rocc. Because we took the time to strip the car down properly, the final result will be much more professional. Moreover, the 3D-printed samples proved to be a perfect fit, which paves the way for the final assembly phase.

We have many exciting updates coming for this project. Specifically, stay tuned for future posts covering:

  • Upholstery repairs to refresh the interior.

  • B Pillar restoration and new decal installation.

  • Techtonics Tuning 2.25″ exhaust for a performance boost.

  • Engine maintenance to ensure the 8v runs perfectly.
