Description
Bulletproof Lower Steering Column Bearing Retainer Lock
Our Lower Steering Column Bearing Retainer Lock supersedes the spring (PN: 171 419 343 A) on the lower steering shaft. This puts tension on the bearing race, which holds tension. With this updated part, it will lock the upgraded lower bearing in place. Furthermore, this will lock the entire assembly together at the bottom, making the spring obsolete.
Made from bulletproof polycarbonate carbon fiber. This lock will last longer than most parts on your car. Guaranteed.
Repairs slop in your steering column, when your wheel moves in and out. Also, great for upgrading when rebuilding your steering shaft.
- Supersedes from Part No.: 171 419 343 A / 171419343A
- To Part No.: 171 419 343 B / 171419343B
Firstly, the Lower Steering Column Bearing Retainer (Part #171-419-517/A) is a specialized upgrade designed to prevent common steering column failures in classic Volkswagens.
Why You Need This Retainer
Secondly, the standard steering columns often suffer from a failing lower plastic bearing cage. Moreover, it can cause significant play or vibration in the steering wheel.
-
Prevents Plastic Failure: This split sleeve physically retains the plastic bearing cage within the steering tube. Because it’s bolted and not a spring, it will eliminate any sliding or breaking.
-
Avoids Column Removal: You can install this part without removing the entire steering column, provided the bearing race remains intact on the shaft. For example, see install guide below.
-
OEM Appearance: It features a black oxide finish, allowing it to blend seamlessly with your factory steering components.
Steering Column Bearing Retainer Installation Guide
Next, to install the retainer properly, follow these steps:
-
Split the Sleeve: Separate the two halves of the machined sleeve. -
Position Flush: Place the sleeve flush against the lower bearing cage at the base of the steering tube.
-
Align Screws: Ensure the cap screws sit parallel to the flat sections of the steering column shaft.
-
Secure: Tighten the screws to 10 nm, which will lock the bearing in its permanent position.
