20L Liqui Moly Bottle Seals

Liqui Moly 20L Bottle Seals

Liqui Moly BottleIt is incredibly frustrating when your Liqui Moly Bottle Seals leak. The amount you have investested in high-quality maintenance products – only to deal with a mess in your garage. At West Coast Roccos, we know many of you use Liqui Moly products for your classic Volkswagens. We recently addressed a common concern regarding whether the Liqui Moly 20L bottles leak during storage or use. If you prefer buying in bulk to save money on your Scirocco’s oil change, this guide is for you.

Understanding the 20L Jug Design

The Liqui Moly 20L container features a heavy-duty plastic design built for professional shop environments. These large jugs use a specific integrated pour spout hidden beneath the screw cap. While the design is generally robust, leaks usually occur due to minor user errors during the initial opening process.

  • The Seal: A foil induction seal sits under the main cap to prevent leaks during shipping.

  • The Spout: You must pull the integrated spout out firmly until it clicks into place to ensure a leak-proof pour.

  • Air Venting: These jugs do not have a separate traditional air vent, so the oil may “glug” if you pour too quickly.

Common Causes of Leaks

Most reports of leaking Liqui Moly 20L bottles stem from the secondary seal or the spout seating. Transitioning to bulk oil requires a bit more care than using standard 1L or 5L bottles.

  1. Improper Spout Seating: If the spout does not “lock” in the upward position, oil can seep around the base of the plastic neck.

  2. Temperature Fluctuations: Storing large jugs in a garage with extreme temperature swings can cause the plastic to expand and contract. This pressure occasionally forces a small amount of oil past the threads if the cap is not tight.

  3. Residue on Threads: Always wipe the threads clean after a pour. Leftover oil on the neck can travel down the side of the jug, making it appear as though the bottle is leaking.

Pro-Tips for Liqui Moly 20L Bottle Seals Storage

We use these bulk containers daily at the shop for our mechanical restorations. To keep your workspace clean, we recommend a few simple habits.

  • Use a Specialized Tap: We highly recommend the Liqui Moly 20L DIN61 tap. It replaces the standard cap and allows for a precise, valved flow without lifting the heavy jug.

  • Store Upright: Never store these jugs on their side, even if you think the cap is tight.

  • Drip Trays: Place your 20L bottle on a small plastic tray or a piece of cardboard to catch any stray drops from the spout.

The Liqui Moly 20L Bottles Leak Solution:

Liqui Moly does not sell the PVC Viton seals separately. Our Liqui Moly rep said there is a link to buy the same size seals that Liqui Moly uses in their drain cock kits. They do not work that well either. That is why we came up with our own solution. Polyurethane seals. We 3d print poly seals and tested them over the last few months. Once we installed these, the bottle never leaked. You can now purchase these here. These will be the last seal you ever buy for your containers.
